The Entomological Society of Japan was founded as the Tôkyô Entomological Society in 1917 at the Second Student Hall of Tokyo Imperial University, with the aim of advancing and popularizing entomology. In 1935, it was renamed the Entomological Society of Japan. As a leading entomological society in Japan, it engages in a wide range of activities while maintaining cooperation with related academic societies.
Chronological History
1917
- March 10: The Tôkyô Entomological Society was founded at the Second Student Hall of Tokyo Imperial University.
1921
- The society's regulations were revised, and the position of president was established.
1926
- The society's bulletin "Kontyû" was first published.
1928
- Significant revisions were made to the regulations, and a council was established.
1935
- The society was renamed the Entomological Society of Nippon (From 1949, the English name "The Entomological Society of Japan" was used).
1936
- September 27: The first annual meeting was held at the Tokyo Science Museum (now the National Museum of Nature and Science).
1938
- The Nippon Society of Applied Entomology was established, effectively separating the applied field from the Entomological Society of Japan.
1944
- Under rationing control, volumes 16 issue 3/4 of "Kontyû" were published but were largely lost before reaching members.
1945
- May 24-26: Volume 17 issue 1 of "Kontyû," which was ready for binding, was destroyed in an air raid.
1949
- "Kontyû" was revived, and a new volume 17 issue 1 was published.
1949-1953
- Branches were established in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Shinetsu, Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
1957
- To commemorate the 40th anniversary, a commemorative conference and exhibition were held, a complete index of "Kontyû" was published, volume 16 issue 3/4 was reprinted, and the society's emblem was established.
1966
- The Committee on Insect Conservation was established (Reorganized as the Committee on Nature Conservation in 1969).
1973
- The establishment of the society's fund was decided (Research support from the fund began in 1976).
1980
- August 3-9: The 16th International Congress of Entomology (ICE) was held at the Kyoto International Conference Center and surrounding facilities.
The society joined the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE).
1988
- A merger proposal was received from the Japanese Society of Applied Zoology and Entomology (The merger was not realized in 1995).x
2017
- Transitioned to a general incorporated association.
